Ex-rebels says scholarship in UP, PUP used by Kabataan partylist to attract students to join leftist groups

Former communist rebels who were recruited during their studies in the university faced a Senate hearing and narrated how they were recruited by the left-leaning groups when they were still young students.

Among those who testified before the public hearing by the Senate public order and dangerous drugs committee chaired by Senator Dela Rosa was Alvin Turero who admitted that he also one of those who recruit his co-students.


“Sa murang edad na-recruit nila ako hanggang sa naging recruiter na rin po ako. Sabi ng Kabataan partylist sa akin pangakuan mo ng scholarship sa UP, PUP pero nung magpapasukan na, isa dun ‘yung pamangkin ko na narecruit ko, wala po ni isang nakapasok sa school,” Turero said.

“Bilang isang organizer ng kabataan party, ang nakukuha ko yung may galit sa magulang, ‘yung mga yagit. Kapag may hindi kumakain, binibigyan ko ng pagkain. Kapag nabigyan ko ng pagkain akin na ‘yan, bibigyan ko ng pag aaral,” he added.

Also one of the former rebels Nancy Dologuin, a former Mindanao University student. She said the League of Filipino Students (LFS) under the Gabriela Women's group in 2016.

“Mayroon akong hinanakit sa loob ko. Naiinis ako sa mga lalaki kapag nakikita ko sila dahil sa ginawa sa akin. Perfect naman, lumapit itong LFS na nagpapakilalang Gabriela, kasi nandoon ang diwang palaban ko,' Dologuin said.


She was a victim of an attempted r@pe, also the exact reason why she joined the organization.

Meanwhile, another former rebel Agnes Reano, who said she was recruited by the alliance of Students Against Tuition fee Increase at the age of 13 at the Ateneo de Naga University.

“Noon hindi ko alam na pumapasok na ako sa organisasyon, ang alam ko lang ay pinahihiram nila ako ng libro kasi mahilig akong magbasa," she said.

“Nung marecruit ako nung first year, estudyante ako by day, NPA (New People’s Army) by night. Pinanumpa akong kandidatong kasapi, kapag sinabing kandidatong kasapi automatic you become a member of the armed (NPA),” Reano further.

“Kung tatanungin n’yo ako kung may recruitment sa school, kami ang buhay na patunay, buhay na ebidensiya na narecruit ako, naging recruiter ako,”
